In this increasingly hostile and polarized world- full of people who think it’s not their problem- Jesus calls upon us to put the values of our religion into action by seeing the face of God in other people, by remembering that there is something sacred at stake in every moment, and by reaching across lines that have been drawn in the sand to write a new type of story that is based upon showing up for another and showing mercy to one another.
We cannot build and foster meaningful relationships without stepping forward in love. We cannot sit idly and hope to create networks and attract friends. To live outwardly, to truly see others and reach out to them, reflects the kind of love God calls us to. Love like that expands our worldview. It cannot be contained within us or within the small communities we build, but instead it pours out of us into the world. That is the power of God’s love working through us. It cannot close us off or limit us; it can only ever grow.
